Area 6 is mostly located over Nebraska and Iowa and also partially over Kansas and Missouri. The main traffic flow through Area 6 is east west; in-line with the New York-Los Angeles corridor. MSP, MCI and STL terminal areas generate otherwise, most crossing traffic. Area 6 serves departures and arrivals for OMA, DSM, LNK and MCI. The sectors include: 2 responsible for FL240-FL340, two for FL350-FL380, one for FL230 and below and one for FL390 and above. Area 6 is bordered by Area 5 to the north, ZAU to the east, ZKC to the south and ZDV to the west.
Offutt Air Force Base, which hosts the 55th Wing, is located within Area 6’s boundaries. The wing’s mission is to provide worldwide reconnaissance, real-time intelligence, command and control, information warfare and combat support to U.S. leaders and commanders. One of the wing’s units, the 55th Operations Group, operates 46 aircraft, including 13 models of seven different types and has operational control over 12 squadrons and 2 detachments worldwide. Area 6 is often used as an orbit area for the SAC Airborne Command Post “Looker” aircraft at FL260. The “Looker” is often refueled on a random refueling track on J64.
