Area 4 is the largest and possibly the most diverse airspace of all the 6 Areas in ZMP. Located over North & South Dakota and the northern half of Minnesota, Area 4 consists of 1 low altitude sector, 3 high altitude sectors and 3 sectors that control from the ground and up. With numerous uncontrolled airports and many areas of non-radar, an Area 4 controller needs to have a strong knowledge of airport arrival/departure rules and procedures and of non-radar separation and coordination requirements. Their northern boundary is Canadian airspace, which requires manual coordination, flight plan passage and hand offs. They handle numerous military airspaces, training routes and refueling operations. They work with 6 approach control facilities, 2 VFR towers and 1 part time VFR tower. Their high altitude sectors are responsible for sequencing aircraft to MSP, ORD and during the summer months to east coast airports via “CAN ROUTES”.
